It is not the remotest hint in the Governor's Despatch that the office is unnecessary or that he considers it a fit one to be abolished. All which casually appears is, that the Clerk was at that time absent on leave, and that another person was engaged to do his duty, which fact rather would imply that his services were necessary.
I learn that Mr Miles, who was the Clerk in question, died in England at the end of October 1848, and a successor was appointed to him (Mr Have) by Lord Grey by Despatch dated 23rd of February 1849.
Treasury must, I think, have made some mistake. I should propose to explain the circumstances to
